Being the owner of this farm property has given us a unique look at history. We put a lot of thought and effort into preserving and respecting the past, while also bringing the farm into the future. Decisions to remove or modify a feature of the property are never taken lightly. One outbuilding on the farm property was an old barn (age unknown) with an integrated corn crib. Corn cribs are a traditional method of drying and storing harvested corn, with wooden slats or wires spaced to provide airflow. I had seen examples of standalone corn cribs on other farm properties, but I had never seen one like this. Unfortunately after many decades, this corn crib was the only thing that was providing the structural support for the building, and the overall safety of the structure had become a concern. We reluctantly came to the decision that this particular building would need to be removed.

In 2024, we began a painstaking process of dismantling the old corn crib barn and salvaging its beautiful old-growth oak and poplar boards, which were likely originally sourced from the area. Instead of a bulldozer, this involved strategically taking the building apart using temporary supports, ladders, and removing hundreds of (very old) nails. This barn wood (including most of the corn crib) is being stored, cleaned up, and repurposed, some at the same location as the former building.

Our goal is that what comes next will honor the past while ushering in an exciting and vibrant future for the farm property. The building site, with its gorgeous view of the ridgeline of the farm property, is a perfect spot for an outdoor pavillion space to host farm guests. Currently, the area is an active construction site. We can’t wait to share the “after” pictures!
